Eroding the Channel

The river erodes its bed and banks in four ways.

Erosional process

1) CORRASION

An erosional process by which the rock fragments carried by the river grind against the bed and banks of the channel.

2) ATTRITION

An erosional process by which rock fragments in the water knock against each other.

3) SOLUTION

An erosional process by which water in the river reacts with soluble minerals in rocks and dissolves them.

4) HYDRAULIC ACTION

An erosional process by which rocks are broken loose and dragged away from the bed and banks of the river by the force by the running water itself.
